It didn't rain today! It did rain a little this evening, but during the day, it was only partly cloudy. We didn't go to the American Museum of Natural History as a result. We'll save that for one of the three rainy days next week.
We didn't get out of the hotel until almost noon. I got on the 1 train at Times Square and got off at 72nd. I've learned my lesson about only choosing to get on and off at accessible stations. I have to walk a lot more, but I don't mind that.
We went to Central Park and Mei Li directed us to the perfect place to have lunch, right by the turtle pond under a willow tree. The children didn't eat a whole lot. What child could with all of the rocks and sticks just waiting to be thrown into the pond? That's what my children did for more than an hour.

It turned out to be kind of a hot and muggy day, but Central Park is wonderfully shaded almost everywhere. I could have let the kids throw sticks and rocks into the pond for hours. They did eventually get bored and Mei Li asked to go to a different park.
I was exhausted at that point, but I continued on. First to the women's restroom, then on to West Drive. We walked by the lake, where we saw couples in rowboats in the water. Maybe we should do this tomorrow with Steve?
We were heading towards 72nd street again, my legs were very tired, and it was hot. With us being this close to the subway stop, we weren't going to explore more of Central Park today. So I tried to make the walk back as interesting as I possibly could.
I saw a turtle on a rock by the lake and stopped to show the kids. Then Stephen and I saw a horse and carriage. Mei Li couldn't see it because she was in the back. So I ran to catch up with the carriage so Mei Li could see it. I looked ridiculous I'm sure.
Speaking of how I look these days, I look more practical than fashionable here. I wear my old running shoes and an Eddie Bauer backpack everyday. So far, I haven't had any ankle swelling on this trip, and I'm so grateful.
There was a drink and ice cream stand that had ice cold water priced for people desperate for refreshment. I spent $6 on three bottles of ice cold water. It didn't seem like a rip-off at the time. It felt heavenly. The kids seemed to appreciate it too.
We got on the express train back to Times Square and then back to the hotel. It was around 4:15. Stephen was asleep by then so I let Mei watch a movie while I rested on the bed and tried to figure out where we were going to eat for dinner.
Steve came home around 5:40. We talked about going to Patsy's Pizzeria, Five Napkin Burger, or Brooklyn Diner. We started towards Patsy's, which was going to be a long walk, but then it started to rain.
We headed to Five Napkin Burger, which was closer, only to realize that the pre-theater crowd had filled up the place and there was a wait to get in. Brooklyn Diner, however, had a booth ready for us when we got there. Man, that place is expensive! It was pretty good food, but I don't really like paying $18 for a cheeseburger. Good thing we weren't the ones paying for it.
We put the kids to bed around 9 PM. We always fall asleep around the same time they do, but I usually get up a couple hours later to record our day and plan the next day's itinerary.
We have Steve with us tomorrow, which means that tomorrow will be the first best day in NYC.
