We had a very enjoyable second day in Boston. It started well when we were able to sleep in and leisurely get ready for the day. Our first stop was to Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market. Even now I'm not exactly sure why this building was significant, but it was pleasant to walk through and Ie Li saw something on the ceiling that seemed like it would go well on our wall so it was a good visit.
Our next stop was Boston pizza at Ernesto's in the North End, a recommendation from the hotel. On our way, we were distracted by a bike rental store. In a few quick seconds, riding bikes through Boston sounded like a great idea and we were in the shop signing the forms. Such a transaction is the benefit of not traveling with children - quick, impulsive, over priced decisions. Now I understand my parent's travel habits so much better. I think if they traveled with children these days, they might plan ahead a bit more.
Anyway, our decision seemed a bit too impulsive as we wound our way on the one way streets to Ernesto's pizza, and had a hard time finding a place to put our bikes while we tried to get our pizza. We may or may not have tried to call and return the bikes then and there. However, after pizza, we were feeling much better, and after deciding that biking the Freedom Trail was not the best idea, we concluded that riding along the Charles River bike bath to Cambridge would be delightful. And in fact, it really was. The weather was perfect and the path was wide open and the scenery was great.
We stopped for pictures in front of the complex where my parents lived in Boston and then proceeded onto the Harvard campus to look around. We got to listen in on the tour guide telling the story of the donation for the Harvard library. It made me want to see the ghost reading room with the fresh flowers. After birthday shopping at Anthropologie (where I was complimented by the sales person for waiting so patiently), we crossed the river and biked along the other side back to Boston.
Once back in the North End and having more confident biking legs, we made it to the Old North Church and Paul Revere's house. We also walked through the small asphalt "overlook" that was dedicated in the honor of Paul Revere's wife. Seemed a bit unfitting for such a woman.
On our way back to the hotel through Quincy Market, we stopped for some souvenir shopping for the kids. We ended the evening with a lovely dinner at Legal Seafood, complete with chowder, oysters, fish, crab cakes, and Boston Creme pie.
When we returned to our hotel that evening, Ie Li convinced me that I should be the one to blog about our day. I convinced her that we shouldn't be spending our precious vacation time blogging so here I am finishing up the recap two days later.
