NYC: Day 12

Today and last Saturday were our two best days in New York. I'm glad our stay here will end on a high note.

This morning, we ate breakfast at Sarabeth's. It was pretty good. Steve's farmer's omelette was delicious.
The kids ate pancakes, their favorite. I had french toast and it was pretty yummy. French toast is my favorite breakfast food when done right. I'm not sure any french toast will come close to Marston's in Pasadena. Oh Pasadena, I miss you for so many reasons.

Then it was on to the American Museum of Natural History. We paid for the butterfly exhibit again. Stephen was much more brave today. Steve had a butterfly land on his hand. Mei Li and I tried on Thursday and today to get butterflies to land on our hands, but we were unsuccessful.

I suppose we need to visit the butterfly exhibit at the Smithsonian in DC. It's cheaper. Lots of things are cheaper in DC.

We visited the dinosaur exhibits that we didn't get to on Thursday. The kids took a picture with "Rex-y."

Mei Li and Stephen were excited to see "gum gum," as they call him, from "Night at the Museum." Visiting the Pacific Island People exhibit made me miss my hula days in college. I need to start dancing again.

I thought we had visited all of the animal exhibits on Thursday, but I was wrong. We saw the rest of them today.

I really love that museum. The kids are so happy and excited there.

We went back to our hotel to drop off our stroller and then walked to New Amsterdam theater for "Mary Poppins." Our kids were very well-behaved. Steve reported that Stephen was asking him questions the whole time, but he was so quiet that I couldn't even hear him. We all loved it. The sets and the costumes were beautiful and we left feeling uplifted. I want to be the "spoonful of sugar" type and not the "brimstone and treacle" type.

Mei Li walked out of the theater with a hand holding each side of her dress so she could swish it around like Mary Poppins. It was very cute, but somewhat problematic while walking on the busy Times Square sidewalks.

We picked up the stroller and took the train to The Shake Shack, which ties with the Peking Duck House and Clinton Street Baking Company for favorite New York culinary experiences.

The line was very long, but their burgers are DELICIOUS. I wish I had ordered a double. The fries are probably my favorite of all the burger places I've been to. I was disappointed in my chocolate shake as it was a bit too chocolate-y, but the vanilla was yummy.

In case you're interested, here is my ranking of favorite burger places:

1. In-N-Out: Other places seem to be able to compete taste-wise with In-N-Out, but nobody can compete with their prices, speed or chocolate shakes.

2. Z Burger in DC: Fantastic burgers, fries, and shakes. If you live in the area, you must try it out. There is one in NW DC and one in Georgetown.

Tied for 2nd. Shake shack: Great burgers and fries and shakes (except for chocolate), but the wait is just too long.

4. Five Guys. I love Five Guys burgers, but they don't have shakes!

After dinner, we hopped back on the train and walked back to our hotel. The kids were jumping off the walls tonight. We probably fed them too much sugar tonight. Sometimes we do that.

Today was our last full day in New York. We leave tomorrow afternoon. Steve and I will be apart for four days and then he's back for good. I'm looking forward to that.

I'm so sleepy. Good night.

Ie Li- I have loved reading about your adventures in NYC. I must admit that I have been jealous on more than one occasion, but am so glad you got to be there with Steve for so long. What an amazing experience for your little family! I am hoping one day to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. It sounds absolutely delightful! Safe travels tomorrow and good luck enduring your last few days as a single mom.

I LOVE that you chronicle your food! I always like hearing about who ate what, where, if that place was good, and if it was, what made it so good . . . Have you heard about the new cooking channel? I'm so excited!

I need to call you . . . It's been WAY too long!
